Traditional Montjoie Citizens Gun Club Shooting Festival 1361 e.V.
The historical roots of gun club culture in Monschau can be traced back to the 14th century. At that time, the citizens themselves were responsible for defending their towns. Part of their civic duties were to defend the castle, the gates and the walls. Over the centuries gun clubs were formed from these duties, and traditions such as shooting wooden birds and crowning the champion shot were born. Gun clubs in the current sense were first formed in the middle of the 19th century, and this was also the case in Montjoie.
Over the following years the shooting festival developed into a large public festival with a fair. Gun clubs were retained through both world wars, but mostly in a considerably reduced form. The gun club was reformed in March 1952, and was given the name "Bürgerschützen Montjoie 1361 e.V.".
In this year the Monscher Fair was replaced by a "MONSCHAU FAIR of bygone days”. The picturesque backdrop of the Monschauer old town is now the showplace for a historical fairground carousel, a big wheel from the turn of the century, horse-drawn carousels, show stalls and swing boats which remind us of days long past. The Paris street performer Gilbert supplements the fair with brief performances as a fire eater, pantomime, juggler and his flea circus. The smell produced by a wide range of fairground delicacies and culinary specialities invite the visitor to stay around and to enjoy the unique atmosphere.
The special mix in the fairground will be one of the specific attractions. Artisans from right across Germany will be presenting their special abilities and will invite you to wonder and purchase, stalls will be offering the sort of goods that you cannot buy in shops. The whole event will be accentuated by music produced by a large barrel organ with its typical "fairground sound". Simply let yourself relax and be amazed!
Vibrant hustle and bustle between the old walls, a mediaeval old town with idyllic half-timbered houses, narrow alleyways and cobbled roadways - Monschau is the cultural centre of an entire region and one of the most popular holiday and excursion destinations in the Eifel.
With its picturesque, twisty lanes, Monschau is a particular attraction for tourists especially in the warm summer months. In the centre of the old town, which is crossed by the small Rur River, you will find cafes and pubs in addition to handicraft and souvenir shops. We invite you to spend some quality time in Monschau.
